Which shock absorbers are better?

I want to change the rear shocks on my %26#039;86 Mitsubishi Tredia. The old ones are in an awful state.I found new ones for sale, but they%26#039;re gas shocks.Whereas the originals were oil ones. The guy at the parts shop actually recommended oil shocks since the roads here where i live are quite bad.

So my question(s) :Should i buy the gas shocks that are made for Tredias?Or keep looking till i find something oil-based that is compatible? What are the pros/cons of each type?|||Seems like the oil shocks are more durible and will last longer as the gas shocks are smoother and not so much durible. It%26#039;s up to you bro.
